You would need a scientific calculator for this but you can also use one of the online calculators available to compute the apothem of your polygon. So the formula for calculating the apothem ends up being If we split one of the n triangles into two mirrored right angled triangles, the tangent of half the central angle would be equal to half the length of each side (the opposite side) divided by the apothem (the adjacent side). Since the sum of the angles in each of the n triangles would add up to 180°, and the two other angles in the triangle are essentially identical halves of the interior angle, we can calculate the interior angle as 180 – 360/n which sometimes written as ((n-2)*180)/n. If the polygon has n sides, the central angle would be 360/n. First, we will start with the central angle. Let us figure out how the apothem can be calculated if we know n (the number of sides) and the length of each side in studs. This will allow us to attach the polygonal wall firmly to a baseplate. If we create a regular polygon using LEGO pieces, we need to ensure that the distance between any pair of opposite sides (which would be twice the apothem) is close enough to a whole number of studs. Shown below is a hexagon with 6 equal sides that we will be using for illustration purposes. In a regular polygon all the interior angles are also equal. The points where any 2 adjacent sides intersect is called a vertex and the angle they make at the vertex interior to the polygon is called the interior angle. A regular polygon has n (where n is 3 or more) sides of equal length. Limiting our discussion to regular polygons (polygons where all the sides and angles are equal), how do we determine what the length of each side should be and ensure that at least one pair of opposite sides of the polygon line up with the LEGO grid (so that we have a way of attaching the polygonal wall to a baseplate) ?įor this, we will have to first review the geometry of polygons and familiarize ourselves with a few basic terms. If we extend this concept further, we should also be able to build a continuous chain of angled wall segments that form a closed shape – namely a polygon. In this earlier post we have seen how LEGO hinge plates can be used to create angled walls. These sets also have quite a bit of internal reinforcement created using Technic elements, and we will not be getting into all the details of that for this article.īefore we start diving in, we need to get a few prerequisites out of the way – namely polygon geometry, an overview of the Technic pieces used to create the inner frame in the Globe set and of course the wedge plates that are used in conjunction with regular plates to create the outer “skin” in both sets. We will try to understand conceptually how the outer shapes of the globe and the shield are put together (not necessarily following the instructions for the actual sets). And so, in this third installment of my series on ‘The Math Behind LEGO Techniques’ (the two previous installments are here and here), we will be delving into the math behind the Globe and Captain America’s Shield. I am a bit of a novice with this technique myself, but I couldn’t resist the challenge of trying to reverse engineer the two official sets (the Globe and Captain America’s Shield) to try to uncover some of this math. Michigan Avenue (John Hancock Center)Ĭlearly, there is some interesting math at play here. Different versions of Empire State Building.

And despite some improvements, the Oura Ring struggles to track workouts, so if that’s important to you, a dedicated fitness tracker might be a better choice. If you just want to track your sleep cycles and get tips, a free (or modestly priced) sleep-tracking app may do the trick. (Oura recently announced that the cost of the ring is eligible for reimbursement through a flexible spending account or health spending account. However, the ring costs about $300 or more, depending on the style and finish, and Oura’s app now requires a roughly $72 yearly subscription to access most of the data and reports. It’s also more comfortable and discreet to wear than most wristband wearable trackers. Please see my Disclosure for more information. Repetition shows kids that the world can be predictable, and that helps them to feel more secure. "When they feel good they do it again and again to get the 'good feeling' and also to maintain mental balance." "Songs have predictable patterns making learning easy and fun - kids feel good about learning and 'knowing,'" she adds. When little ones feel out of balance, they're driven to "explore, discover, and learn the information that restores their mental balance." "Kids seek familiarity, which helps them feel safe in a world that is often overwhelming." she continues. "For kids, so much of the world is new," developmental psychologist Kim Metcalfe tells Romper. Inevitably, you'll have those jarring moments when a song from the part of your brain that deals with your kid spills over into the part of your brain that processes things like politics:Īs it turns out, however, there's actually good reason to like these little tunes, and it has to do with why your kid likes to sing them all the time. "I particularly like the syncopated clapping." "If I see the 'Creature Report' before the school run then that catchy little tune stays in my head all day," said another. 'Creature Report' is one of mine, and it drives me absolutely batty! All morning at work. "No one tells you that one of the things about parenthood is that you spend several years (I assume) with a constant internal theme tune going on. "If you haven’t yelled from your kitchen 'Creature Report, Creature Report,' are you really a parent?" asked an article on New Zealand's The Spinoff. There's no shortage of parents venting similar frustrations online. One thing is for sure, which is that you're not alone in your earworm-induced agony. But why? Why do kids get stuck on certain songs to the point where nobody in the house can remember if other tunes exist? Currently, it's a song from The Octonauts that I just can't shake - probably because my youngest kid won't stop singing "Creature Report, Creature Report" all day and night. When my oldest was a toddler, it was the Elmo's World song with my middle child, Wonder Pets. As a mother of three kids ranging from 4 to 17 years in age, I've spent a considerable portion of my life humming snippets of theme songs from children's TV shows (often without realizing it). Sure, they'd run with them in the sprint race on a drying track, but that's a very different scenario to a dry surface with a build-up of temperature. One consequence of the miserable weather lingering around the Ardennes over the weekend was the gaping chasm left in the teams' data sets for the three compounds of slick tyre. Ferrari looks to be getting on top of tyre degradation Photo by: Michael Potts / Motorsport Images 3. Has Ferrari finally found a way to master the Pirelli tyres? In that case, the in-car soundtrack might be a further bone of contention. Nonetheless, the break probably comes at a helpful time - unless, of course, their families had booked an all-inclusive trip to Lanzarote together. There's a great respect between the two of them and that's comes out of a mutual trust that you must have between an engineer and a driver. And you've got to be a strong character to deal with that, and GP is our Jason Statham equivalent, I guess, they certainly look alike and he deals with him firmly but fairly. "GP and Max have been together since the first race that Max stepped into the car," reflected team boss Christian Horner, who waved away any concern of internecine warfare between the two. Verstappen suggested that he could push harder and that the team could do "pitstop practice", but 'GP' denied that request. Thus, the ex-Force India man was not particularly pleased when he saw Verstappen light up the timing screens on the soft rubber post-pitstop, concerned that his driver was going to expel all of the tyre life in one glory run at the fastest lap. Wary of the tyre degradation on the slicks, which had been masked until Sunday as none of the other sessions had been run in completely dry conditions, Lambiase prompted Verstappen to "use his head" in conducting his tyre management obligations. That said, they continued to resemble an old, married couple attempting to decide on which shade of magnolia to paint their living room in over the race. Verstappen's reaction, if any, was not broadcast, although he apologised to Lambiase after securing pole - who quipped that he was "slowly getting used to it." "OK, and when the track was two seconds quicker for your final lap and you didn't have any energy left, how would that have gone down? You tell me what you want to do in Q3 and we'll do it". During Q2, Verstappen was particularly peeved at the "execution" of his run plan and reckoned he should have done two hot laps in succession, prompting Lambiase to cut him back down to size. Photo by: Red Bull Content Pool 2.but he and 'Red Bull's Jason Statham' probably need a holiday apartĮvery now and again, Verstappen and his race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase air their disagreements on the radio - but that's true of any driver-engineer relationship. Verstappen and Lambiase radio squabbles became a highlight of the Belgian GP weekend Luckily, at that speed as well, you have quite a bit of downforce on the car." Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. "I mean, it happens, you quickly try to correct it. "It was just a bit more slippery than I thought it would be," he reckoned. The Dutchman suffered a slight brown-trouser moment during the mid-race smattering of rain, which left the track surface feeling greasy and enforced a snap of oversteer during Eau Rouge. It was a day where Verstappen could have started from the pitlane and won. Compared to his 2022 ascent from 14th to first in the space of 12 laps, this year's efforts were comparatively leisurely, but it was still inevitable that Verstappen would steamroller his way to the front once again. Once Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc had been passed, Verstappen hacked away at his team-mate's lead and breezed past on the 17th lap. Not that Perez had the resources to put up much of a challenge. But he'd face a fight to keep it, once Verstappen made his way through the order. Perez started on the front row alongside the pole-by-default Charles Leclerc as Verstappen took a five-place grid penalty for a gearbox change, and the Mexican collected the lead on the opening lap with relative ease. Verstappen dominance is reaching new heights.Ī gap of 22.3 seconds separated Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez at the flag. Verstappen continues to scale new heights in 2023 Here's the 10 key talking points from the pre-summer Spa weekend. While battles for the lead were effectively non-existent and the front four finishers enjoyed somewhat solitary races, there was plenty of food for thought in the race's aftermath as F1 moves towards its customary summer break. Born in Belgium, Verstappen cruised to victory at his second home race to extend his advantage in the championship to a whopping 125 points over Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez, having won the last eight races.
